A Strong El Niño Is Building: What Changes on the Farm From Late 2026 Into 2027

NOAA puts the odds of a very strong El Nino at 63% for the Nov 2026 to Jan 2027 peak. See the regional impact and how to adjust planting and hedging.

The notice went out on 11 June, when NOAA formally issued an El Niño Advisory. Since then the conversation has stopped being about whether it happens and started being about how big it gets. The Climate Prediction Center is working with roughly a 63% probability of a very strong event during the peak window, from November 2026 through January 2027 — precisely when South America sets yield and Australia harvests.

For anyone with a crop in the ground, that is not newspaper meteorology. It is a planting calendar, a variety decision, a dryer capacity question and a price-protection call.

From an erratic La Niña to a heavyweight El Niño

The 2025/26 season was farmed under a La Niña that behaved unpredictably, delivering heat and missing rain at the worst possible moments and leaving a lot of growers under budget on yield. The shift into the Pacific’s warm phase has been slow and gradual: effects begin to show in the spring of 2026 and build through the following summer and autumn.

That slowness is deceptive. Because the event matures between November and January, the risk is not spread evenly across the year — it concentrates in a handful of critical weeks around flowering and grain fill.

The map of winners and losers

El Niño is not good or bad across the board. It redistributes rainfall.

  • Argentine Pampas and southern Brazil: historically wetter through spring and summer. This is the friendliest scenario for soybeans and corn planted October through December, with a higher risk of waterlogging and tight windows for field operations.
  • The U.S. Corn Belt: the transition skews cautiously positive, easing drought across the southern United States and helping winter wheat get established.
  • Australia: the most exposed region. Wheat and barley planted in May and June would face drier-than-normal spring conditions during the October–November reproductive window.
  • Southeast Asia and Southern Africa: a tendency toward moisture deficit, pressuring rice, palm oil and white maize.
  • Northern and northeastern Brazil: more frequent dry spells, which weighs on the Matopiba region and on the second-crop corn window.

The market is already reading it

A weather risk premium started showing up in prices well before the event peaked. Corn set new contract highs in late August on technical buying and fund positioning after Pro Farmer projected U.S. production well below official estimates. In Europe, the MARS service cut yield expectations by 5% to 6.61 t/ha, around 7% under the five-year average.

Oilseeds moved the other way: soybeans slipped despite a reasonable Pro Farmer estimate, and the vegetable oil complex suffered alongside crude. In other words, the market is separating immediate supply risk from forward weather risk. Anyone who blends the two together when setting a hedge is going to get it wrong.

What you can do before the Pacific decides

No agronomic programme cancels out ENSO, but plenty of them reduce the variance of the outcome.

Stagger the planting. Putting the whole farm in during a single window is a bet on one forecast. Splitting seeding across two or three windows, with varieties of different maturities, keeps a single extreme event from landing on every flowering date at once.

Revisit drainage and traffic. In an El Niño year in the south, the problem is rarely a shortage of water — it is not being able to get into the field. Terracing, land levelling and low-pressure tyres stop being details and become the operational bottleneck.

Size drying and storage now. Harvesting wet grain inside a short window destroys more margin than two bushels of yield. Dryer throughput and static storage capacity are August decisions, not February ones.

Use the data you already pay for. Platforms such as Climate FieldView and the John Deere Operations Center already cross field-level rainfall history against yield. That cross-reference answers the question that actually matters better than any general bulletin: which fields on my farm break first when the rain stops?

Treat hedging and insurance as one problem. In a high weather-risk year, forward selling without production cover simply trades price risk for delivery risk. Scaled sales combined with crop insurance or options cover both sides.

Sources worth watching week to week

The Climate Prediction Center bulletin updates monthly with revised probabilities by quarter. In Brazil, crop surveys from Conab and agrometeorological alerts from Embrapa translate the global signal into regional impact. For exporters, the Grains: World Markets and Trade report from USDA/FAS shows how the rest of the world is responding to the same weather.

The expensive mistake is treating this as news

There is a pattern that repeats with every ENSO cycle: the grower reads the headline in August, agrees with the diagnosis, changes nothing in the crop plan and is caught out in January. The value of a four-month weather warning is not in forecasting rain on a given day — it is in letting input purchases, machinery scheduling, freight contracts and marketing strategy be designed for a wider distribution of outcomes.

A very strong El Niño, if confirmed, will be the dominant driver of grain prices in the first quarter of 2027. Anyone entering that window with concentrated planting dates, tight cash and an uncovered short position is relying on luck. Luck is not a crop plan.
